As future leaders in the agriculture industry, we as individuals have a multitude of opportunities at reach! In the College of Agriculture, Food & Environment Sciences there is a wide range of clubs that help us grow as leaders as well as connect with individuals within and even outside of our college including Agricultural Ambassadors, Agricultural Leadership Society, Food Science Club, Latinos in Agriculture, and the list goes on. These clubs and organizations are just some of the opportunities at reach for us in CAFES.
This April, members from the Latinos in Agriculture, had the opportunity to attend the national conference for Minorities in Agriculture Natural Resources and Related Sciences (MANRRS), held in North Carolina. This conference gives students around the country the opportunity to participate in various MANRRS competitions. Public speaking competitions, elevator pitches, and even business pitches gave individuals an opportunity to expand their horizons, as well as connect with individuals in the industry.
“This was truly a life-changing experience, and I am happy that I was able to attend this conference during my time attending Cal Poly, I really encourage individuals to step out of their comfort zone to embrace the all the opportunities available to them to ensure optimal success,” said Chantal Herrera, a two-year MANRRS attendee. At her first MANRRS conference, Chantal was offered an internship with John Deere. Herrera accepted the internship, and as she graduates next fall she will continue her career with John Deere.
As emerging leaders in agriculture, we have the ability to impact others. Reflecting on the MANRRS conference theme,“Preparing our Future, Empowering our Present, and Honoring our Past” a very important message is highlighted. By learning from our pasts and preparing for our future we have the opportunity to impact individuals in our present lives with the ability to impact and empower others within and even outside of the agriculture field in a positive manner. As we continue our journey at Cal Poly let’s ensure that we take all the opportunities within the CAFES department to make a positive impact for ourselves as well as for others within and out of the college!
